PSG star admits he wants to join Manchester United, despite Real Madrid links
What's the story?
Paris St-Germain right back, Thomas Meunier has sparked rumours of a move to Manchester United, by admitting he is a fan of the Premier League giants. The 26-year-old has enjoyed a stellar start to the season and was linked with Real Madrid and Chelsea in the summer. In an interview with SFR Sport 1 Direct, the Belgian was asked which teams he plays with in FIFA and replied, "Manchester. The real one, Man United. Because I’ve always been a fan."
In case you didn't know...
Thomas Meunier came to prominence in his home country of Belgium for Club Brugge, before Paris St-Germain parted with a minimal €7 million last summer to bring him to the Parc des Princes. The Belgian had an impressive 2016/17 season with his solid performances at the back, including a couple of memorable strikes such as the one against Barcelona in the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League, in addition to great performances for Belgium in 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying.
The heart of the matter
Meunier has previous when it comes to admiring words for Manchester United. Speaking to Belgian outlet DH earlier this year, Meunier said "I’ve always said that one day, I would like to play in the Premier League. I’m very happy in Paris and if I finish my career there, it won’t be a disappointment, far from it. But, if one day, I had to leave Paris, why not?"
"On the other side of the Channel, there are the stadiums, the fans, and I’ve never hidden that I’m a big fan of Manchester United, which remains, in my eyes, the real reference in the world of football."
Jose Mourinho is reportedly interested in a right-back after doubts over Antonio Valencia's performance levels as he ages. Matteo Darmian is seen as far too defensive and as a left-sided defender, while Ashley Young is too suspect defensively. Thus Meunier's balanced style of play would fit perfectly into Manchester United's system.
However, PSG might be against selling Meunier in January, since they have already parted with Serge Aurier, coupled with the fact the Real Madrid are also interested in Meunier's services.
Thomas Meunier is a player approaching his prime, and while he certainly won't come cheap, Manchester United might take advantage of his keenness to come, thus reducing their total financial outlay on his wages and the transfer sum.
