Rafa's square pegs into round holes isn't working!

Like a lot of Chelsea fans at the moment, I am looking into reasons as to why our form has been woeful of late and besides one other issue, for me it’s a case of square pegs into round holes as far as Ryan Bertrand and Oscar are concerned. Both are being played out of position and despite the fact it’s obvious, I am at a loss as to why Rafa Benitez keeps playing them there?

Ryan Bertrand has taken some stick this week around different websites and social media and it’s unfair. He is being asked to play higher up to literally fill in that position and it’s something that he isn’t comfortable with but he still goes out there to try and do his best.

He is a left back. He isn’t an attacking midfielder and if anything at the moment, it’s disrupting his development. Bertrand is not the finished article by a long shot but he is on the way there. Playing with Ashley Cole and learning from him for another season can only be good for Bertrand and for the future of Chelsea Football Club as Bertrand becomes the natural successor to Cole within the framework of our side.

Oscar isn’t a winger either but, under Benitez, he is continually played there or asked to also fill in and do a job for the team.

I simply cannot understand it after the club has invested in Marko Marin who is a natural winger. He has openly admitted to play out wide as being his favoured position but is being overlooked. When he does play, he looks out of his depth and nowhere near ready through no fault of his own. He simply isn’t being enough game time.

Oscar is a central midfielder. He likes to get his foot on the ball and to try and dictate possession. Of course with the likes of Juan Mata and Eden Hazard in the side it’s difficult for him to do so initially but it’s a matter of time before he does come inside and makes the position his own.

In Oscar we could have the natural successor to Frank Lampard as an attacking midfielder who can also score goals. Being asked to play out wide isn’t something he wants to do but like Bertrand, continues to do so to try and help the team but again, it isn’t working.

In order for Chelsea to improve their performances we need to get the right shape and balance to the side. with Bertrand and Oscar both being asked to play out of position, it’s become obvious that Rafa Benitez’ square pegs into round holes hasn’t worked out and he needs to find an alternative solution.
