#3 David de Gea (2013 Premier League winner)

Arguably the best Premier League goalkeeper of the last decade, David de Gea has been a solid performer in the competition. He has made an astonishing number of saves (64) in the Premier League, more than any other keeper in the division.

He has fewer clean sheets (4) and a slightly worse save percentage (71.1) than his compatriot Robert Sanchez. However, De Gea ranks higher than Sanchez due to his heroic performances for Manchester United, having saved three of four penalties this season.

Manchester United have been far from their best in the Premier League this season, especially in defence. David de Gea has had to bail them out of trouble on many occasions. Seventh-placed United are six points adrift of the top four, albeit with two games in hand, thanks largely for the former Atletico Madrid man’s exploits.

#2 Aymeric Laporte (three-time Premier League winner)

Eyebrows were raised when Aymeric Laporte switched nationalities from French to Spanish last year. It was undoubtedly the right decision, as a player of his quality deserves to play for a top nation. It was criminal that he never represented France, who are spoilt for choice across positions.

Laporte was sensational for Spain at Euro 2020, where Luis Enrique’s men reached the semi-finals. Easily one of the best defenders in the Premier League, Laporte has formed an indispensable partnership with Ruben Dias this season.

The 27-year-old centre-back has made nearly 1500 passes, more than any Spanish player in the English top flight this year. He has also scored twice, demonstrating his utility to his team.

#1 Rodri (2021 Premier League winner)

Rodri is one of the many Manchester City players who don’t get their due credit. Despite not being as defensively sound as Fernandinho or Fabinho and industrious as Kante or Henderson, Rodri has been one of the best defensive midfielders in the last few seasons.

The Spanish general has been at the heart of Manchester City’s midfield. He has completed 1398 passes, more than any non-City player this season. The former Atletico Madrid man has also scored three goals and provided one assist.

The Spaniard might not stand out in a star-studded Manchester City team, but his contributions can never be understated. The Premier League reigning champions felt his absence when he didn’t start in their Champions League final against Chelsea last season.
