Lukaku: The next Droba?

Former Chelsea player and coach Ray Wilkins believes Romelu Lukaku can return to the club and become the clubs next Didier Drogba.

Lukaku has struggled at Chelsea since joining the club from Anderlecht and has only made a handful of appearances at Stamford Bridge. He was sent out on-loan last season to West Brom where he impressed and Lukaku was an even bigger hit this campaign as he excelled at Everton during a season-long loan spell as well.

The 21-year-olds future is still under scrutiny, particularly after Chelsea agreed a deal for Costa on Monday night. Lukaku, who was called up to Belgium’s World Cup squad today, can be the next Didier Drogba if given the chance at Chelsea, according to Ray Wilkins.

He told talkSPORT: “He has to come back to Chelsea in my opinion. This young man is the closest thing you’ll see to the ‘Drog’ at such a young age.

“The 21-year-old’s success at Everton also presents a difficulty for boss Roberto Martinez as it appears the Toffees will struggle to land the striker again either on loan or permanently.

“Lukaku scored 16 goals at Everton in the Premier League so [his departure] is a massive problem for Roberto Martinez, as it was for West Brom.

“He scored 17 for West Brom. He leaves, goes to Everton, then scores lots for them and West Brom nearly get relegated. It’s tough for Roberto.”
