Real Madrid dominated the ball in a predictable fashion in the game. The Los Blancos had 74% possession in the game. They completed 699 passes compared to just 258 from the away side. Club Brugge knew that they had to maximise the opportunities on the counter, and they did just that.

Percy Tau took advantage of Dani Carvajal's advanced position and ran in behind him into space. He played in Dennis for the opening goal who was in acres of space in the box. For the second goal, Dennis took advantage of a terrible pass from Luka Modric to race through on goal. He was off-balance but managed to manufacture a lifted finish to make it 2-0.

Like Modric for the first goal, other Real players were guilty of giving the ball away in their own half. Brugge did not punish them on those occasions, but the damage had already been done.
