Real Madrid player ratings

Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid - UEFA Super Cup
Sergio Ramos was Real Madrid's best player

1 K. Navas 5/10

The Costa Rican international goalkeeper has seen his place as Real's number one come under threat with the signing of Thibaut Courtois, and conceding four goals tonight would have done nothing to aid his cause. Although in fairness to the 31-year-old, none of the goals was his fault.

5 R. Varane 3.5/10

The World Cup winner was slow off the pace and showed signs of lacking match fitness, perhaps due to his World Cup exertions with France. Was constantly caught out of position including for Costa's opener, while his horrible error led to Saul Niguez's goal in extra time.

4 S. Ramos 7/10

Captain Marvel was at his emphatic best once more, defending resolutely and putting his body on the line. He put Madrid ahead with a well-taken penalty and was involved in multiple scuffles with Diego Costa, could do nothing to prevent any of Atletico Madrid's goals.

2 D. Carvajal 5/10

The Spain right-back had an unusually subdued game, affording Lucas Hernandez tons of space on his flank, and he failed to offer his orthodox attacking runs down the channels.

12 Marcelo 5.5/10

The Brazilian left-back was his usual marauding self, contributing to Real's attacks with his trademark bursts forward, although he left a lot of space behind which was constantly exploited by Atletico Madrid

14. Casemiro 5.5/10

The Brazilian was solid in his holding midfield duties, effectively breaking off Atleti attacks, although he showed some signs of lacking match fitness, owing to his World Cup exertions with Brazil. He was replaced by Dani Ceballos on 57 minutes.

8. T. Kroos 5.5/10

Kroos was effective if unspectacular, he failed to control the game from midfield, and was overrun on some occasions by the Atleti midfielders. Replaced in extra time by Borja Mayoral.

11. G. Bale 6/10

The Welshman would be given a bigger role in the Real team owing to Ronaldo's departure, and the 29-year-old failed to seize the opportunity. He put up an impressive performance in the first half, but frittered away for the rest of the match. Will have to massively step up if he is to step into the huge shoes left behind by the talismanic Portuguese.

20 M. Asensio 5.5/10

The young Spain international posted a decent game, particularly in the first half where he had a shot sent narrowly wide after some impressive footwork in Atletico's box. Was replaced by Luka Modric in the 57th minute.

22 Isco 4/10

The Spain international was largely an anonymous figure on the pitch and failed to make any meaningful contribution to the Real attack for the 83 minutes he was on the field until he was replaced by Lucas Vasquez.

9 K. Benzema 6/10

Put up a good show as the spearhead of Real's attack. Put Los Blancos ahead with a well-taken header and constantly drifted out wide to cause the Atleti back line trouble.

Substitutes

10 L. Modric 5/10

The World Cup Golden Ball winner started off from the bench, but was introduced in the 57th minute and struggled to settle into the rhythm of the game. Forced an easy save from Oblak with a half-volley in the second half of extra time

17 L. Vazquez 4.5/10

Didn't have too much too do, and was as ineffective as the man he replaced (Isco), watching on as a spectator as Atletico Madrid dictated proceedings.

24 D. Ceballos 5/10

Came on for Casemiro on 57 minutes, and contributed decently enough with some good runs forward, although they all amounted to nothing.

21 B. Mayoral n/a
