What's the rumour?

Chelsea star Marcos Alonso has been one of the standout performers for the Blues this season and now latest reports in Spanish outlet El Gol Digital (via The Express) claim that Real Madrid are planning to cough up £50 million for the Spanish left-back in the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old star is definitely one of the best wing-backs in the Premier League and according to the report, his performances have not gone unnoticed with a number of top European clubs interested in signing the Spaniard.

Having started his career at Real Madrid, Marcos Alonso even made a league appearance for Los Blancos before having spells at Bolton, Sunderland and Fiorentina where he finally established himself as a world-class wing-back.

Ever since his move to Chelsea in 2016, the Madrid academy graduate has taken his game to the next level and his wonderful crossing, set-piece abilities and defensive skills played a huge role in Chelsea's Premier League title triumph last season.

The heart of the matter

Marcos Alonso was visibly disappointed after his side's Champions League elimination to Barcelona and he even questioned the club's transfer policy.

He said: “It’s difficult as there are so many games this year and we have not got the deepest squad, maybe, and we have had new players this year.

“We can only look forward and start fighting for fourth spot in the Champions League and try to win the FA Cup.”

With Real Madrid seemingly looking to groom Alonso as Marcelo's long-term successor, the move might well come to fruition in the summer transfer window.

Rumour rating/probability

6/10

Alonso is one of the key members of the Chelsea side and in the current transfer market scenario, a fee of £50 million looks a bit too cheap for a player of Alonso's calibre. Also, the Blues will not want to sell their ace wing-back without getting in a quality left-back first and a lot will depend on whether Chelsea find a suitable replacement for the 27-year-old Spaniard.

Author's take

While Real Madrid signed Theo Hernandez this season, the youngster has struggled to make an impact at the Bernabeu. With Marcelo close to 30, the signing of an experienced left-back like Alonso will certainly add depth and quality to the Real Madrid squad.
