La Liga 2016-17: 5 Talking Points: Real Madrid 2 - 1 Atletico Bilbao

Ronaldo rises HIGH above the Bilbao defence, but cannot direct his header goalward

#2. Luka Modric and Casemiro are Madrid’s real stars

Modric and Casemiro have been magnificent under Zidane (this is a file photo from last year’s UCL – which is why you can see Mkhitaryan on the field of play)

The first point leads to this one. The certain components I mentioned in that point were in essence Luka Modric and Casemiro. The Croat and the Brazilian have shored up a lot of holes – and their qualities have seen Madrid conquer their lack of identity and gel into a seamless, fluid, entity.

Modric’s unmatched footballing intelligence and quick, skillful, feet have been essential in linking the defence and the overloaded attack that Madrid boast. It’s all great having the BBC up top but starved of their regular service-on-a-platter, they look half the force.
Casemiro, meanwhile, has been the bedrock of the side – putting in crucial tackles, intercepting balls, nipping opposition attacks in the bud and prompting his team’s best moves, the defensive midfielder has done it all and more. Here’s a chat for you to chew on – With Casemiro in his side, Zidane has a 100% win record. Which highlights just how ridiculously good (and criminally underrated) the man is!
Without the two in their side, Madrid appear to lack drive, force, cohesion and that overpowering sense of supreme conviction in their own purpose that often define the best Madrid teams. Keep Bale, Benzema, Isco, James, Kroos and even Cristiano Ronaldo aside. These two are Madrid’s real stars, and it has taken their absence to prove it to us.
