In what is essentially a match-up of two brilliant defensive set-ups, the heart of defence is, perhaps, the most difficult area of the XI to choose. While the Blues have a host of players to pick from, including the likes of Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen, and captain Cesar Azpilicueta, it is Brazilian veteran Thiago Silva who starts at centre-back.

The former Paris Saint-Germain captain has had an instant impact on Chelsea since moving from France and has added a sense of composure and solidity at the back even before Thomas Tuchel took over. Silva's vast experience of playing at the highest level has vastly benefited the Blues' defensive unit, and he is the ideal pick for central defence.

The 36-year-old has been in fine form as well, given that he was one of the best players on the pitch as Chelsea registered a clean sheet in their recent victory against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City at Wembley.

Tuchel's former star will be accompanied by his teammate, Reece James, on the right-hand side. James is a relatively easy choice for the full-back slot given that first-choice Real Madrid man Dani Carvajal has spent a large part of the season on the sidelines. The Englishman has also been in fantastic form this season, with his impressive displays even earning him a call-up to Gareth Southgate's England squad.

Real Madrid stalwart Raphael Varane will partner Silva at the heart of defence for this side. After a disappointing end to last season's UCL campaign and a few shaky games at the start of the season, the French star has seemingly returned to top form and contributed heavily to Real Madrid's superb defensive form this season.

If Sergio Ramos was available for the game, he would have partnered Silva in defence, but the Spaniard is unavailable for selection. Varane's compatriot and teammate Ferland Mendy could have joined him in this XI as he has been one of the best full-backs in world football.

However, Zidane has confirmed that the French star will also be unavailable for the game, paving the way for Ben Chilwell to start at left-back. The Englishman has had an impressive season in his own right as he's been vital for Chelsea on both offensive and defensive fronts, having accumulated five league assists and two goals.

Chilwell makes it over the other options on the left of defence, such as Marcos Alonso, Nacho Fernandez, Marcelo, and Emerson Palmieri.
