Reports in Spain suggest that French striker Karim Benzema would favour a Ligue 1 move over an Arsenal switch should he leave Real Madrid next summer when his contract is due to expire.

In an incident that fuelled much speculation over an Arsenal bid for Karim Benzema, Arsene Wenger made several telling comments recently on French TV, forecasting, among other things, that the Frenchman would with all certainty play in the Premier League one day.

However, according to the Daily Star, Benzema has his eyes set on a return to his home nation with PSG, who despite having just forked out a figure near £50m for Chelsea’s David Luiz and having been fined as much by UEFA for breaching FFP rules, remain in the market for their top targets.

Wenger was piloried by both press and fans for failing to make additions to the Gunners’ strikeforce in January and Bezema has long been mooted as of interest to the North London club, whose only trusted senior striker is Olivier Giroud. It has also apparently emerged that he has no intention of signing an extension with Los Blancos.

Many in the press feel that Wenger intimated Arsenal were confident of one day signing Benzema and, should the French boss fail to land his compatriot striker, who netted 17 times during the previous La Liga season, a frustrating, if not embarrassing situation, could arise.
