Report: £52m agreed as Romelu Lukaku becomes part of the deal to bring Diego Costa to Chelsea

Diego Costa (L) and Romelu Lukaku (R)

According to newspaper reports, Chelsea have agreed a £52m deal to meet the release clause in the contracts of Diego Costa and Filipe Luis combined and Romelu Lukaku will head to Madrid as part of the deal struck with Atletico by Jose Mourinho.

In what has seemed like an eternity to get the Costa deal done, considering he passed a medical a few weeks ago, it now seems that because the Spanish side has been eliminated from the World Cup, the deal is likely to be confirmed as soon as possible.

There had been reports that a deal for Filipe Luis had held up the Costa deal as Mourinho had insisted that he wanted BOTH of them. Atletico refused to budge asking for the £20m that would release Luis from his contract and after lengthy negotiations, Jose Mourinho decided to pay the amount and the double deal at a cost of £52m should be confirmed shortly.

I have to be honest, I am still not 100% convinced about Costa and the money we are paying for him because he hasn't really impressed at the World Cup.

Another person who hasn't impressed me at all either is Romelu Lukaku as discussed on here yesterday.

It seems that Lukaku is maintaining his position, wanting first team football and Mourinho is refusing to budge. Having seen both his performances so far in Brazil, I agree with the manager.

Now it's being reported that Lukaku has become an important factor in Atletico's decision to allow Costa to move on. It's not apparent if Lukaku would move on a permanent deal to Madrid or if a loan arrangement has been agreed but it looks like he will not be at Chelsea again next season.

As I said earlier. In what has seemed like an eternity, Chelsea are now close to completing a stunning £52m double deal in addition to the signing of Cesc Fabregas as Jose Mourinho builds a team capable of winning the Premier League next season!
