Reports: Arsenal enter race to sign Serie A defender

SSC Napoli v AS Roma - Serie A
Can Arsenal lure him to the Emirates?

What’s the rumour?

As per reports from The National (via Metro), Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly is a reported transfer target for Arsenal this summer.

In case you didn't know...

Koulibaly made the switch to Napoli in 2014 when he joined the club from Belgian side Genk. The 26-year-old has been an ever-present in their line-up since and has made over 150 appearances for the club in all competitions.

He is physically imposing, fast and his aerial prowess makes him a threat in front of the goal as well. He has been voted into the Serie A Team of the Year the last two seasons.

His current contract with Napoli ends only in 2021.

The heart of the matter

It has been a season to forget for Arsenal who finished outside the top-four for the second year running. They were hopeful of success in the UEFA Europa League but were beaten in the semi-finals by Atletico Madrid.

Their defenders have come under heavy criticism this season for dismal performances and they want to set the record straight next season. To add to their troubles, captain Laurent Koscielny is set to be sidelined for around 6 months with an ankle injury.

Thus they are looking at possible reinforcements and have identified Koulibaly as a prime target. The Frenchman has also been linked with Chelsea but Arsenal hope to win the race for the player, who is valued at £53 million.

Rumour rating/probability - 6/10

Despite multiple sources reporting the same, a transfer still looks far off at the moment and once we approach the transfer window, things will get a lot clearer.

Author’s take

Arsenal really need to strengthen their defence if they want to challenge for trophies next season and Koulibaly will be a solid addition to the team. Napoli will be willing to let go of the player, provided a substantial offer comes in, but the Gunners will need to act fast to win the race as they are not the only club eyeing a move for the defender.
