Reports: Spanish manager favourite to replace Arsene Wenger

Arsenal v Burnley - Premier League
Arsene Wenger will take charge of Arsenal one last time today

What’s the rumour?

According to a report from Express, Unai Emery has emerged as the clear favourite to succeed Arsene Wenger next season. The Spaniard has confirmed that he will depart Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the current campaign.

In case you didn't know...

Unai Emery made a name for himself during his stint at Sevilla. He spent 3 years at the Spanish club and led them to 3 successive UEFA Europa League trophies. He also finished as the runner-up in the Copa Del Rey in his last season at the club.

He made the switch to PSG in 2016 and has won 7 trophies in the space of two years. However, their failure to qualify to the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League piled the pressure on him and he announced his decision to leave the club when the season ends.

The heart of the matter

After a historic 22-year reign at Arsenal, Arsene Wenger is set to step down at the end of the season. He will take charge of the club for one last time today when they travel to Huddersfield and many managers have been tipped to succeed him.

However, as per the report, Emery has emerged as the leading man to land the job. His wage demands of a reported £8.5million a year may need some negotiation as Arsenal may not have the financial backing to be able to match the figure.

Rumour rating/probability - 6/10

Many managers have been linked with the London club and at the moment Emery is also one among them. Not many credible sources have reported the same news yet and things will get a lot clearer in the coming days.

Author’s take

Emery will be an ideal choice to replace the legendary Frenchman and his track record with Sevilla and PSG proves his eminence. He is also capable of managing high-profile stars and if Arsenal can rope him in, we can expect them be in the running for major honours within no time.
