What's the story?

According to ESPN, Manchester City defender, Vincent Kompany is ready to lower his wages to stay at the club for one more year with his current contract expiring at the end of the current campaign.

In case you didn't know

Kompany signed for Manchester City in 2008 from Hamburg and has been instrumental in City's success for all these years. He led the side to Premier League glory on the last day of the 2011-12 campaign after a dramatic injury-time winner saw the Citizens snatch the title away from the jaws of their neighbours.

Since then, he has added a couple more Premier League winners medal and a few other trophies which include a FA Cup, three League Cup, and two Community shields. Vincent is the current club captain and is regarded as one of the best Premier League defenders of all time.

The heart of the matter

Despite leading City from the front, Kompany has struggled with knee injuries in his career. He is not getting any younger which extends the recovery time even further and thus takes away the game time that he desperately needs.

Pep Guardiola is an admirer of Kompany and his leadership skills but has raised concerns about his injuries and has cast doubts on his ability to stay fit for an extended period.

However, the player doesn't want to leave the Etihad, considering his affection with the fans and has a family at Manchester as well. Hence, he is willing to settle for lower wages to spend one more year at the club where he has tasted all the success in his career.

Rumour Rating - 8/10

ESPN is one of the most reliable sources and given Kompany's time at the club; it looks evident that the player wants to spend most of the last few years of his illustrious career at Manchester City and help the club win few more silverwares throughout this period.

What's next?

Manchester City are fighting on all four fronts and have a crucial Champions League knockout game against Schalke. Though the Belgian would not be fit for the tie, he is expected to return in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.
