Reports: Manchester United eyeing Napoli star

Manchester United v Arsenal - Premier League
A shrewd move from Mourinho?

What’s the rumour?

According to a report in the British tabloid The Sun, Jose Mourinho is weighing up the possibility of signing Napoli forward Dries Mertens this summer.

In case you didn't know...

Since signing for Napoli from PSV in 2013, Mertens has evolved into one of the most lethal strikers in the world. In 231 appearances for the Italian side, he has found the back of the net 90 times and has 58 assists to his name as well.

Primarily a left winger, he has often been deployed as a central striker as well and has continued to show his prowess in front of goal. He is also a central figure in the Belgium national team and has won 65 caps for his country.

The heart of the matter

Manchester United have lacked quality on the flanks this season and many of their players have been largely inconsistent. Mourinho wants to address this issue ahead of next season as he prepares his side to challenge on all fronts next campaign.

Thus he has turned his attention to Mertens who, reportedly, has a £25 million release clause in his contract for foreign clubs. His versatility is also seen as a huge plus by the Portuguese and as per the report, he has urged the United board to make a move for the player.

Mertens has scored 22 goals this season and his contract with Napoli runs out in 2020.

Rumour rating/probability - 6/10

Many sources are reporting the same and we believe there is some truth after all in the rumours. We will get a clearer picture in the coming weeks.

Author’s take

Despite being 31 years of age, Mertens is showing no signs of slowing down and he still has a lot to offer. He will undoubtedly add more firepower to United's attack and Napoli may find themselves in a helpless situation if the player is keen to move and United meet his release clause.
