What’s the rumour?

According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, Paris Saint-Germain have joined the race to sign Shakthar Donetsk midfielder Fred this summer. The Brazilian has been extensively linked with a move away from the club.

In case you didn't know...

Since his arrival at Shakthar in 2013 from Brazilian club Internacional, Fred has enjoyed a meteoric rise to his career. He has evolved to be their midfield enforcer and has made over 150 appearances for the club in all competitions.

He has been in brilliant form this season and as a result, he has been included in Brazil's 23-man squad for the FIFA World Cup. His contract with the Ukranian club runs out only in 2023 but as per the report, he has a £52.89 million release clause included in it.

The heart of the matter

Fred has been linked with moves to Manchester United and Manchester City in the past, but if the report is to be believed, PSG are also vying for his signature.

Many changes are expected at the French club this summer following the departure of Unai Emery. Ex-Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel has recently been appointed as his successor and we expect a busy summer from the club.

Thiago Motta has announced his retirement as well and the club are actively looking at midfielders to replace him. They have identified Fred as a possible target and a perfect player to complement Adrien Rabiot and Marco Verratti.

Rumour rating/probability - 6/10

Although Fred is extremely likely to make a switch this summer, his destination is not clear yet. Since many clubs are interested in the player, a transfer saga looms large.

Fred seems to be a player of real calibre and it is understandable why some of Europe's biggest clubs are after him. He will definitely add quality and a Brazilian flair to any team instantly. Shakthar will be open to sell the player if a substantial offer comes in.
