Florentino Perez has told Sergio Ramos that Real Madrid will not sell him

Manchester United’s chances of signing Sergio Ramos have taken a major hit after Real Madrid supremo Florentino Perez told the defender that he would not be sold under any circumstances this summer, as per The Guardian. The meeting took place last night in Guangzhou, China where the Los Blancos recently arrived to take part in the International Champions Cup as they continue their preparations for the new season.

The meeting which ran late into Sunday night was attended by Florentino Perez, Jose Angel Sanchez, the vice-president of Real Madrid, Ramos himself and his brother and agent Rene Ramos. In the meeting, Perez sought to bridge differences with the Madrid captain and also told Ramos that if he makes his desire to leave public then this would worsen his relationship with the fans.

Ramos close to agreeing extension with Real

Ramos had previously told the club hierarchy of his desire to leave for pastures anew after almost 10 years at the club at a meeting with Jose Angel Sanchez at Valdebebas, the club’s training ground on June 24. At that point, Madrid set a transfer fee that was prohibitively high, but did not rule out a move for the Seville-born defender away from the Bernabeu.

With Manchester United in the market for a world-class centre-back, their interest in Ramos was concrete and Van Gaal confirmed it at a press conference when he was asked about transfers, saying, “Maybe Mister Ramos is in the process”.

But according to reports from Spanish daily Marca, the meeting that took place between Ramos and the Madrid hierarchy last night managed to clear lot of bad blood between the two parties, although it did not result in a definitive agreement. At the meeting, Ramos made it clear how angry he was at the leaked information and rumours that had come from the club regarding his contractual status. Both Perez and Sanchez said that they regretted all that had gone on and that the best way forward was to bury the hatchet.

Also, during Iker Casillas’ farewell, fans had chanted “Ramos is not for sale” and called for the President to resign. During the ceremony when Perez was asked whether Ramos would be sold or not, he replied, “There are some players with contracts who want to go, but will not be allowed to,” making it crystal clear that Ramos would not leave under any circumstances.

In principle, the idea for both parties is to continue negotiating and will look to get back to it once the team return from their tour of Asia. However, with Ramos’ brother and agent Rene still in China, further talks may be held between the two parties, before final discussions at the Bernabeu.
