Romelu Lukaku reacts to Jose Mourinho's comments and faces long term battle

The current situation with Romelu Lukaku leaves the majority of Chelsea fans frustrated. As we see our strikers struggle for goals, Lukaku has scored 7 in 6 games and has reacted to comments made by Mourinho, and now issued an open challenge for the season ahead.

Lukaku has reacted to comments made by Jose Mourinho when he was questioned about Lukaku’s start to this season. Mourinho stated that “It’s one thing to play for Everton another to play for Chelsea” and it seems to have hit a nerve with the young Belgian.

Lukaku responded by saying:

“I want to score more goals than the Chelsea strikers. We will see at the end of the season who made the best choice.”

We all sit and watch Lukaku’s goals and performances as we did last season and wonder why? I cannot understand for the life of me why we let him go this season. OK, last season was understandable to prove himself and have a season gaining experience.

This season however is a different matter. When we asked to go out for another season Jose should have refused. Can someone tell me if Demba Ba or Samuel Eto’o are better than him or going to be better or more productive than him this season?

The only explanation I can think of is down to the style of football we want to play. Mourinho talks of the high press up the pitch with each player working hard without the ball. Does Lukaku fit into that mould? I don’t think he does, but you have to consider whether or not his goals will more than make up for that?

Look at Everton v Newcastle the other Monday night. Lukaku in the first half was excellent, scored two goals and had an assist for the other goal and he looked dominant against the Newcastle back four. They simply couldn’t live with him.

Now look at Lukaku’s second half performance and anyone who watched ALL of it would have seen a completely different player. He looked tired and as though he was struggling and couldn’t impose himself as he did in the first half. Maybe that is what Mourinho has seen in him and made the decision he did.

For me it’s never going to be who scores the most goals is the better striker this season. For Jose Mourinho it’s always going to be who is the best striker to play in his philosophy and style of football.

Lukaku will more than likely win the race in the goal scoring charts against our three strikers this season. For the young Belgian, it’s more about the race to become an integral part of Jose’s Chelsea.
