Romelu Lukaku would welcome Wayne Rooney 'with open arms'

Rooney would receive a warm welcome at Chelsea

Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku has revealed that he would welcome Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney ‘with open arms’ if at all the ‘angry and confused’ footballer happens to join Chelsea, as Rooney and him could form an effective strike combination for the Blues.

Earlier, United had rejected a bid by Chelsea on Rooney but the premier league third finishers were adamant on making Rooney their’s and came back with a fresh £30million bid to secure the deal. Whether a deal for Rooney can be completed before the start of the premier league is doubtful given that Chelsea face Manchester United in the second week of the season.

However, if Chelsea manage to convince the Red Devils in selling them Rooney, the English footballer will be joining the Blues’ force alongside Lukaku, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba as striking options.

Lukaku, on the other hand, does not want to take the prospect of Rooney’s arrival at Stamford Bridge too seriously and instead maintains:

“You know when you are playing for a team like Chelsea, there is going to be competition.

“It is the manager’s choice. You have to accept that you have to work hard to make it a successful squad.

“If he is part of our team I will welcome him with open arms.”

Following Lukaku’s impressive season for West Brom on loan, the former Anderlecht player is determined to make an impression for Chelsea in the upcoming season

“I feel I am making an impact,” he said. “This pre-season it is important for us to get some performances under our belts.

“I am confident in my qualities and I am just keeping going like I have been doing. Hopefully I will continue to do so.

“I can score more goals, I can get more assists. I can do more for the team. I can score with both feet and with my head. I am very quick and skilful.

“I can do a bit of everything but I can improve on things as well.

“I have to keep improving. Training is going well as well so hopefully I will improve much more by working hard there.”

In the meantime, Mourinho has talked specifically about the need to add a forward who is confident dropping into deeper positions and playing in more congested areas, reminding everyone why Rooney has been the former Portuguese footballer’s prime transfer target over the past couple of weeks.
