Liverpool reportedly want to sign Piero Hincapie as Joe Matip's replacement in the summer. He has been exceptional for a Bayer Leverkusen side that won two trophies, losing only one game this season.
Hincapie has been a mainstay at the heart of the Leverkusen defense. Xabi Alonso's team conceded only 24 goals in 34 league games during their undefeated title run.
Matip, meanwhile, is out of contract this summer. The Cameroonian is not expected to be a part of the Liverpool project under Arne Slot.
According to El Futbolero, Hincapie is not the only Bundesliga defender the Reds are interested in. They are also eyeing Eintracht Frankfurt's Willian Pacho. Pacho is also Ecuadorian, the same as Hincapie. Hincapie or Pacho, or even both could end up at Merseyside in the summer.
Ibrahima Konate has drawn Paris Saint-Germain's interest. Hence, the Frenchman's future could also play a role in the Reds' decision. Hincapie is described as one of the best young defenders in world football. He has an estimated market value of £43 million, which could be a bargain for a quality 22-year-old like him.
Virgil van Dijk hints at Liverpool stay
Speaking of Liverpool's defense, Virgil van Dijk has expressed his desire to stay at the club. The Dutchman foresees a successful spell for the club under compatriot Arne Slot.
Van Dijk also reaffirmed his stance to stay, saying (via GOAL):
"I still have one year left on my contract. I am the club captain and have made it clear that I'm there for the new coach and enthusiastic over the next season. Obviously there will be a lot of changes but I'm sure we'll make a big success of it."
Van Dijk has been the Reds' main defender in the recent past. Hence, him staying could be a big boost for the side in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Dutchman might also have someone promising like Hincapie partnering with him next season.
