Manchester United have added AC Milan defender Theo Hernandez to their transfer wishlist ahead of the January transfer window. This comes after new head coach Ruben Amorim's signing request for a player who can impress in the left wing-back role.
It is worth noting that the left full-back position has been something of a concern at Old Trafford in recent years. Their main left-back Luke Shaw has struggled with staying fully fit for any consistent period of time. This season, he has made just one appearance, with many months spent in search of fitness.
Tyrell Malacia has faced the same problem. He missed the entire 2023-24 season, not playing a single game. This season, he has only made one appearance, and for the U-21 side, rather than the first-team.
While the Red Devils have turned to the loan market to deal with that position, right-back Diogo Dalot has deputized efficiently in the role. However, Ruben Amorim's wing-back focused formation requires a more efficient option, which has forced Manchester United to turn towards the transfer market once more.
They have now been linked to a move for Milan's Theo Hernandez, with Sky Germany reporting (via The People's Person) that the French defender is on United's list. By the summer of 2025, he will have a year left on his contract with the Italian giants. This could reduce his fee considerably for the Red Devils to make their move.
The 27-year-old has been on Manchester United's radar in the last few years, but a deal has never materialized. However, Hernandez, who has scored twice and provided two assists in 14 games this season, could be on his way to Old Trafford next summer.
Ruben Amorim believes Manchester United "will suffer for a long period"
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim believes the Red Devils will have to go through a long period of suffering. This comes after he took charge of his first game at Portman Road, where United faced Ipswich Town in their Premier League clash on November 24.
In a match United were expected to win, they ended up with a 1-1 against the relegation candidates. Afterward, Amorim revealed that it would take time for his ideas to be implemented, telling the press (via BBC):
"I know it is frustrating for the fans but we are changing so much in this moment with a lot of games. We are going to suffer for a long period. We will try to win games but this will take time.
"We have to risk it a little bit [now] and in the next year we will be better [otherwise] next year at the same stage we will be here with the same problems."
Ruben Amorim will have to return to the drawing board, ahead of their next match this midweek. Manchester United are set to face Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League at Old Trafford on November 28, and he will hope he can secure a win in front of the fans.
