Manchester United set to compete with Liverpool for midfielder
Manchester United set to compete with Liverpool for midfielder's signature

Manchester United have reportedly added Liverpool target Mason Mount to their wishlist for the summer. As reported by Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian, the Red Devils view the Chelsea midfielder as an affordable alternative for Jude Bellingham.

As reported by the transfer expert, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has already started his plans for the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have improved significantly under his tutelage since the Dutchman took over at the club in the summer. However, there are still a number of areas where Ten Hag is understood to be looking for reinforcements.

According to Steinberg, the Red Devils boss is believed to have set the majority of his transfer war chest aside for the signature of Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.

Apart from the England skipper, Manchester United have also set their sights on red-hot Napoli attacker Victor Osimhen as they are believed to be looking for a world-class No.9.

Midfield is another area where the 20-time English champions are looking for additions and their priority is believed to be Jude Bellingham.

However, the Borussia Dortmund wonder kid is expected to cost more than £100 million which could be beyond their reach. The England international is also wanted by clubs like Liverpool and Real Madrid, which is why the Red Devils are believed to be looking for alternatives.

Hence, Manchester United have reportedly identified Mason Mount as a cheaper alternative for his international teammate.

Mount's contract with Chelsea expires in the summer of 2024 and contract talks with the Blues have not progressed well. The flamboyant and hard-working creative midfielder is thought to be valued at £50 million and is also wanted by Liverpool.

The England international is on a £75,000-a-week contract at Stamford Bridge, making him one of the lowest earners at Chelsea. The Liverpool target is understood to be looking for a deal that justifies his status in the dressing room.

Mason Mount has scored just three goals and provided six assists in 32 games this season for the Blues.

Manchester United superstar rubbishes claims that Red Devils gave up in 7-0 Liverpool rout

In-form Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford recently rubbished claims that the Red Devils gave up in their 7-0 thrashing to Liverpool on Sunday (March 5).

He said (via Manchester Evening News):

"We didn't give up - that is nonsense. We were unorganised and communication was bad. It comes down to the fact I believe everyone was trying to get back into the game that much, we came away from the principles in and out of possession."

The England international also claimed that the Red Devils' press did not work against Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side. He added:

"I felt the forwards were trying to press, just the forward unit, and were disconnected from the midfield. We were talking but weren't in agreement on what to do. The only thing we can do is learn from it and move on."

Manchester United will turn their action in the Europa League as they face Real Betis in the first leg of their last 16 tie on Thursday, March 9.
