Spanish newspaper El Confidencial has reported that Chelsea have thrown their hat back into the ring in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker – who is out of contract at the end of the season – has been interesting a host of Europe’s top sides. However, Chelsea are hopeful that they can swoop for the striker with a last minute move to ease their well-documented forward woes.

One of the most sought after strikers in World Football, Lewandowski had looked nailed on to be signing for Dortmund’s Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich. However the Pole moved to quash speculation that the move is done and dusted in recent weeks, giving Chelsea hope that they can hijack the move. They also face competition from the likes of Arsenal and Real Madrid.

Dortmund would be less than keen to see Lewandowski join a team in their league, whilst Chelsea are rumoured to be willing to wave a blank cheque in the German side’s direction. El Confidencial reports that Chelsea have told Dortmund to name their price, and hope such a tactic will net them the striker.

The Blues problems in forward areas are well documented. Fernando Torres’s match-winning display against Manchester City looks to have proved yet another false dawn for the former Liverpool striker, with Torres only scoring once this season. Samuel Eto’o has scored two goals in seven appearances, but at 32 years old is not a long term option, whilst Demba Ba is yet to score. Lewandowski scored 24 league goals last season, and has continued in the same vein with nine in 12 appearances this season.

Lewandowski has a 69% shot accuracy this season – more than any Chelsea forward – with 29 shots on target (also more than any Chelsea forward).
