Rumour: Chelsea target Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane as David Luiz replacement

Raphael Varane wanted at Chelsea

Chelsea are reportedly looking to sign Real Madrid centre back Raphael Varane as a replacement for departing defender David Luiz.

Luiz is set to join PSG for a record fee of £40m, the highest ever for a defender, and Chelsea will be looking to provide backups for John Terry and Gary Cahill.

The 21-year-old made just 14 appearances this season after being hampered by a knee injury but played regularly under Jose Mourinho during his time at Real Madrid. David Luiz signed for Chelsea in 2011 from Benefica and isn’t the only defender leaving the club with veteran Ashley Cole announcing that he is leaving the Blues after 8 years. Chelsea are reportedly looking to replace him with either Atletico Madrid’s Filipe Luis or Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno.

Chelsea might also release veteran midfielder Frank Lampard after 14 years at the club as they begin a summer overhaul following a disappointing season.
