Phil Jones: On his way out of Old Trafford?

According to reports, Chelsea could join a list of suitors, including Arsenal, that are monitoring the availability of Phil Jones in the upcoming transfer window.

Manchester United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League means that top clubs around Europe are better placed to prise the Red Devil’s versatile star away from Old Trafford.

Arsenal have been known admirers of the England international since his three-year spell at Blackburn Rovers, while Chelsea are understood to be in the market for defensive cover in the face of David Luiz’s imminent departure from Stamford Bridge.

The 22-year-old’s utility is said to appeal to Jose Mourinho, according to a Chelsea insider that corresponded with [football] direct news.

“I have heard that the manager is looking at Jones at Man United. He’s young, versatile, and I think there’s some hope that he might be tempted to leave to play in the Champions League.”

In light of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand leaving the club at the end of last season, the incoming Louis van Gaal will be reluctant to sanction a deal for United’s now-senior Phil Jones.
