Raphael Varane: David Luiz’s replacement at Stamford Bridge?

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly already lined up a replacement for outgoing centre back David Luiz, with the Guardian reporting that he is interested in bringing in French centre-back Raphael Varane from former club Real Madrid.

Luiz’s move from Chelsea to PSG looks to be all but done, with the Blues to pocket £40 million for the centre back, the highest fee ever paid for a defender.

Luiz was a peripheral figure for Cheslea under Mourinho, making 19 league appearances across defence and central midfield. With Luiz only backup in defence and St Etienne defender Kurt Zouma coming to the club in the summer, it is unknown whether Mourinho plans to directly replace Luiz in defence or to spend the money elsewhere.

The Guardian believe that the Chelsea boss will bring in another defender to replace Luiz, with Real defender Varane top of his list. The 21 year old played 14 times for Madrid last season, with injury hampering his progress, but impressed under Mourinho and could be a long term replacement for captain John Terry at centre back.
