Rumour: Manchester United on high-alert for Barcelona midfielder

Manchester United have been put on alert by the news that Barcelona are looking to sell Alex Song this summer.

The midfielder was signed from Arsenal in 2012 for £15 million but has rarely started a game and often occupies the substitutes bench. It is for this reason that Barcelona may look to let him go in the summer and allow some youth talent to be promoted to the first-team squad.

The Cameroon international is thought to favour a move back to England where he believes he is properly appreciated, and Manchester City could also enter the race for the 26-year-old as doubts persist over Javi Garcia, who also occupies City’s bench.

Song was fantastic for Arsenal and linked up well with Robin van Persie on countless occasions but both players left the Emirates in 2012, signalling a change of times.

However, they could be reunited at Old Trafford if David Moyes’ interest is as serious as has been reported.

There is a gaping hole of talent in his midfield and he must fix it in the summer or risk another season or torture and frustration. Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos is another target for Moyes so it is clear what his intentions are in the summer transfer window.

Is it unsure how much Barcelona would be prepared to sell Song for, but there is no doubt that they do not want to take too much of a hit on the price they originally paid. After all, he is still only 26-years-of-age so the Spaniards could still demand at least £10 million.

It took Song 32 matches in La Liga to finally taste defeat when Barcelona lost 3-1 to Real Sociedad.
