Eto'o: Would you start him against Everton?

Should Samuel Eto’o be given a start against Everton on Saturday evening and what affect do you think that would have on Fernando Torres?

I want to remind you all as to what Eto’o said himself in his interview when he first signed for Chelsea:

‘I am very happy to be here but also anxious because I want to get playing as soon as possible.’

You can take that as you want but to me, that’s a clear indication that he hasn’t come here to settle for rotation and he wants to be playing. Think about it – he is on a reported £130,000 per week contract and must have been given some assurances that he would have regular first team football. It’s the fact he has said that he is ‘anxious” that is intriguing for me.

As we know he is match fit, has been playing regularly in the Russian League and for Cameroon (before he quit this week) and dependant on how Rui Faria feels he is, would be ready to play at the weekend.

We face Everton at Goodison Park at the weekend and let’s have a look at their back four in the three games they have played in the Premier League so far, drawing each of them:

Cardiff v Everton: Coleman, Jagielka, Distin, Baines

Everton v West Brom: Coleman, Jagielka, Distin, Baines

Norwich v Everton: Coleman, Jagielka, Distin, Baines

As you can see, an unchanged back four for each of the games. Both full backs are quick but I wouldn’t say are the quickest and as for Distin and Baines, who would YOU prefer to play up against them, Torres or Eto’o.

The thing to consider here is where Mourinho wants his striker to play. We have already heard from him this season talking of Torres and the fact he drops deep to get involved in our build up play. He doesn’t want that to happen, he wants him up on the shoulder of the last defender.

Let’s face it, of the two, playing that way is Eto’o’s game all day, isn’t it? He has made a success of doing exactly that throughout his career and will continue to do so under Mourinho at Chelsea second time around.

We know that at Goodison, you are always in for a good game. They like to make life difficult, keep things tight and impose their game on you.

Chelsea have the ability and attacking flair to open up their defence and should have the opportunities to look for that through ball/killer pass in between their defence for our man up top.

So, on Saturday evening who will that suit more? Eto’o or Torres?

It’s a tough one really because there are times we will be up against it and I wouldn’t say that Eto’o is an attacker that is there to hold the ball up and bring others into play. Fernando Torres is and can be that sort of player.

So Chelsea fans, today’s question for you is there to be answered (and post your comments below even if you are not registered with Disqus).

Would YOU start Eto’o against Everton?
