Rio de Janeiro, March 11 (IANS): A Clarence Seedorf-inspired Botafogo overcame Vasco da Gama 1-0 to clinch the Guanabara Cup at Rio’s Engenhao stadium.

The former Dutch international started the move Sunday that led to Lucas’ low 79th-minute strike with a defence-splitting backheel that was crossed goalward by Julio Cesar. The title is Seedorf’s first since joining Botafogo from AC Milan in July last year, reports Xinhua.

“This is for the fans, not for me. The supporters that are here deserve it. This wasn’t easy because Vasco has a strong team and the conditions were hot,” Seedorf said.

The victory is the latest in a glittering list of trophies for the 36-year-old, who has won a record four Champions League titles with three different clubs (Ajax 1994-95, Real Madrid 1997-98, Milan 2002-03, 2006-07).

Seedorf said he was revelling in his role as a mentor for the club’s array of young players.

“I am learning as much as possible from them and hopefully they can learn something from me,” he said.
