Premier League summer transfer window in numbers: How much did each club spend?

Premier League Spending 2017 summer transfers
The Premier League set a new record in transfer spending this summer

Just like a kid who received pocket money for the first time in his life, Premier League clubs found a new lease of life when the highly lucrative television deal worth billions pumped in money to the tune of £100m (on average) into each club's coffers.

As a result, a new record was set for spending in one single transfer window in the summer of 2017. In all, the 20 clubs that make up the top division of English football spent a combined £1.425 billion in player transfers. That's more than the GDP of most small nations.

So how much did your club spend in the market? Here's a look at various numbers after the transfer window slammed shut on 31 August.

Which club spent the most?

Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola's side spent a total of £221.5m on incoming transfers. Full-backs Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy cost £100m alone while they also spent big on goalkeeper Ederson (£34.7m) and midfielder Bernardo Silva (£43m).

20% of the clubs spent more than £100m; namely City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Everton.

Which club received the most?

Chelsea.

While the Blues have been known to spend lavishly in the transfer market, they have taken a step back in recent years to balance their books. They did spend £185.4m but they also recouped £110.9m in player sales.

By selling players such as Nemanja Matic (Manchester United), Juan Cuadrado (Juventus), Christian Atsu (Newcastle), Asmir Begovic and Nathan Ake (both Bournemouth), Dominic Solanke (Liverpool - tribunal fee), Nathaniel Chalobah (Watford) and Bertrand Traore (Lyon), the Stamford Bridge outfit became the only club to break the £100m barrier in outgoing transfers.

How many clubs made a profit?

Five.

Surprisingly, both north London clubs Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur had a negative net spend in this transfer window. While Spurs are on a financial tight leash due to the renovation of White Hart Lane, the Gunners only chose to make two signings - one of which was free.

The club's record signing of Alexandre Lacazette (£48.8m) was easily offset by the departures of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Liverpool), Wojciech Szczesny (Juventus), Gabriel (Valencia) and Kieran Gibbs (West Brom).

Tottenham took their time to get going in the market but once they did they smashed their club record to sign Davinson Sanchez for £42m.

The other clubs in the green are Burnley, Stoke City and Swansea City.

At the other end of the table, both the Mancheser clubs had a net spend of well over £100m.

Which club signed the most number of players?

Four clubs signed 13 new players each.

Including loan deals and permanent signings, Everton, Huddersfield Town, Brighton & Hove Albion and Watford signed 13 players.

Arsenal (two players signed) were the only club to sign fewer than four players.

Which club saw the most players leave?

Chelsea.

Including loaned players and permanent transfers, the Blues saw a grand total of 43 players off their books this summer. Of this lot, 29 players were sent out on loan. Manchester City are second with 36 players leaving the club.

As many as eight clubs saw 20 or more players leave the club on loan or on a permanent basis.
