Steven Gerrard admits regret over not playing for Jose Mourinho

Steven Gerrard will join LA Galaxy after spending his entire career with Liverpool

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has admitted he regrets not working with Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho in his career, who had tried to sign him thrice – at Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Chelsea.

The former England international told BT Sport correspondent and former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, ”I love the manager, I love the man, I've had a distant relationship with him for many years but, I have regrets for not playing for the man and the coach because I know he would have made me a better player.”

Gerrard has played for Liverpool throughout his career, with the 2014/15 season being his last season for them and will now link up with LA Galaxy next season. The pinnacle of his Liverpool career was winning the 2005 UEFA Champions League, although, after that, Liverpool have captured only two major trophies till date.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has won eight major trophies with Chelsea including the English Premier League, something which eluded Gerrard in his 27-year association with Liverpool. The LA Galaxy star, however, feels winning trophies is not the only thing at a football club; it’s also about the passion and the joy one receives in donning the club’s jersey.

"I know he would have had more trophies to what I've already won. But looking back now I have no regrets not signing for Chelsea. I don't regret it at all. It's also about memories and love and what those memories meant. Winning four or five trophies with Liverpool means an awful lot more than winning 10 or 11 with Chelsea."

When asked if his loyalty to Liverpool will be repeated in the modern game, the 35-year-old replied, "I don't think you'll see much more. Players are going to move around more. With the amount of money in the game and the opportunities that come about, players are a lot more easily led.”
