The transfer saga

Monish

Nuri Sahin, Luka Modric, Leighton Baines, Lucas Moura and more recently Robin Van Persie. Just in case you haven’t figured it out, these are reportedly a few legitimate transfer targets of the season for the Red Devils. Sir Alex himself admitted that there might be one or possibly two more signings after he got Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell on board.

Luka Modric seems to have slipped our grasp again, strike off his name now and lets see what we really need this season. Any football fan could find out that United lack in the centre of midfield. With Shinji on board , what we require is a robust midfielder. Nuri Sahin fits the bill perfectly. But do we really need him? Tom Cleverley with Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick look alright for now. Our problem came when the prodigal Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison left United last year. Both were tipped to be future greats along with Tom Cleverley by the United faithful.

Next base to be covered is the left wing back. Age seems to be slowly catching up with Patrice Evra. He was made second choice LB at the Euros behind “neighbour” Gael Clichy. We need someone to back him up and possibly challenge him for the position in the eleven. Again, a certain Zeki Fryers went fishing at North London and left a hole in our plans. With Fabio loaned to QPR, the remaining options with us are Robbie Brady, who after an impressive loan spell at Hull City looks promising and the teenager Tyler Blackett. Although both the youngsters look promising for the future, they do not have the calibre to challenge a proven performer like Evra. So Left Back is a genuine concern. Leighton Baines from Everton? Possibly.

Now this leaves us with two genuine candidates. One Robin Van Persie and two Lucas Moura. This is where we need to bring in reality. With our financial position, we can afford to sign only one of the above two. Analysing Robin Van Persie and the positives of the move first. Primarily the dream combination of Wazza and RVP is sure to terrorize any opposition. The league’s top scorers, one left footed and one right footed and both capable of playing in the “hole” behind the lone striker is mouth watering. Unfortunately the pro’s end right there. On the flip side RVP comes with a heavy wage and a sack full of ego. Will that do any good to the team? Plus it leaves an ever improving Danny Welbeck on the bench. This could hurt us in the long run.

Now coming to Lucas Moura and my mind inevitably falls to the South American mystery at Old Trafford. Diego Forlan, Veron, Anderson – all big signings from the continent have failed to impress. That is the reason I feel skeptical about this transfer. On a positive note, reading from reports, Moura, primarily a winger, could play at multiple positions, a quality Sir Alex rates highly. The 30 m pounds price tag though is a deterrent but with no big competition, we can hope to net this fish. His arrival would go well for United and the competition for places would hot up.

In my opinion, this transfer has addressed a long term concern for us at the heart of the midfield with Nick Powell and Shinji Kagawa. By his own words “we’ll try to add one or possibly two more” Sir Alex has his eyes set on other concerns too. Get a left back Sir Alex, if the Glazers are kind buy Moura too.
