What’s the story?

Chelsea shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois recently confirmed his split from girlfriend Marta Dominguez. “In September we decided to split up, on amicable terms. We still love each other and we get along very well, but we don’t have a romantic relationship anymore,” said the Belgian to Nieuwsbald.

"But we don't run away from our responsibilities. We are first and foremost parents of a beautiful princess, Adriana, and our about to be born son, Nicolas,” he added.

In case you didn’t know...

The two met while Courtois was still playing for Atletico Madrid. They already have one daughter together, Adriana, and are expecting their second child soon. The couple were together for over four years before their split in September.

The heart of the matter

Real Madrid were keen on signing the Spaniard in the summer and Courtois too had expressed his desire to move to Spain to live with his girlfriend Marta and his children. However, now that the two have split, it is being reported that the keeper has put a halt to that idea and plans to remain in England for the foreseeable future.

This news could be a boon for Chelsea and the club’s fans as Courtois has been one of the Blues’ best players this season.

What’s next?

Marta, who returned to Madrid following the split, plans to raise the kids in Spain. Courtois, meanwhile, has stated that he wants to be involved in his children's upbringing so it remains to be seen how things pan out in the future.

Author’s Take

Courtois is one of the best shot-stoppers in the world and is an asset to any side. It looks unlikely that the Belgian will move to Spain in the upcoming summer transfer window so Real Madrid would do well to turn their attentions elsewhere. With David de Gea rejecting the Spanish side's advances as well, it is going to be a busy summer for the Madrid side as they look for Keylor Navas' replacement.
