Chelsea have confirmed that teenage defender Tomas Kalas will join German side Cologne on a season long loan deal next season. The 21 year old centre back will spend a year on loan in the Bundesliga, adding to the experience gleamed from previous loan spells at Dutch side Vitesse Arhmen.

Kalas made his first team debut for Chelsea this season, featuring first in the Blues’ Capital One Cup campaign before making his Premier League bow in the 2-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield. That game, which saw him come up against Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, was the first of two Premier League appearances that the youngster made at the end of the season, but with his first team chances next season likely to be limited he is to leave Stamford Bridge on loan.

John Terry, Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma are all ahead of Kalas in the pecking order, while Jose Mourinho has been linked with a number of other central defenders as he looks to replace David Luiz, who made a £50 million move to Paris Saint Germain earlier in the transfer window.

Kalas completed 95% of his passes in his two Premier League appearances last season.
