In the early days of the 2010-11 Liga season, Real Madrid needed to respond against Racing Santander to keep pace with league leaders Barcelona.

After Gonzalo Higuain provided the early lead to the home side, there was no looking back for Madrid as Ronaldo grabbed a quickfire double to all but end the game as a contest.

Ronaldo completed his first hat-trick of the season two minutes into the second period, and just before the hour mark converted a penalty to complete his first quadruple in European league football.

The Portuguese international could have grabbed a fifth in the dying moments of the game but it was not to be as Madrid closed out a facile 6-1 home win.

In a blistering Madrid performance at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Sergio Ramos and Kaka scored either side of a Ronaldo strike before the home side pulled one back at the hour mark.

Ronaldo then took over in the second period, scoring thrice in the space of 12 minutes to complete his second Liga quadruple of the season. In the process, the Madrid striker took his Liga goal-tally for the season to 33.

In a sumptuous performance on the night, Madrid put cross-town rivals Atletico to the sword as they ran out 4-1 away winners to open up a whopping 40-point Liga lead over the Rojiblancos.

Ronaldo opened the scoring with a direct free-kick past a poorly positioned wall midway through the first half. A Radamel Falcao equalizer 10 minutes into the second period brought the home side back into the match, but Madrid and Ronaldo took over from there.

Parity did not last for too long as Ronaldo's stunning long-ranger put the away side back into the lead. Eight minutes from time, the Portuguese international converted a penalty to score his seventh Liga hat-trick and 40th goal of the season, as Madrid stayed clear of Barcelona atop the Liga table.

By the end of the game, the entire Atletico team had managed to score just two more goals in the season than Ronaldo's Liga tally of 40.
