Over the years we have seen many footballers move from smaller football clubs to some of Europe's top teams in the hopes of becoming one of the best players in the world.

Some footballers lack the mentality to cope with the pressure, some have a fall-out with the managers, and some lack the quality to make it at the next level.

The players who end up falling out of favor at their respective clubs, and do not receive much game time. These footballers would ideally benefit if they move from their current club, in search of new challenges in order to move ahead in their careers. Move on, to move ahead.

On that note, we will take a look at the top 10 footballers who are out of favor at their current clubs.

#10 Jesse Lingard

Manchester United Training Session
Manchester United Training Session

Lingard joined Manchester United's youth academy at the age of seven and progressed through the age groups. The footballer made his senior debut while on loan at Leicester City in 2012.

Lingard became a regular at Manchester United in the 2015-16 season under Louis Van Gaal.

The Englishman soon became a crucial member of United's starting line-up and went on to win the UEFA Europa League, FA Cup, FA Community Shield and EFL Cup, having scored in the latter three finals.

Lingard has however had a steep fall from grace in recent years. The 27-year-old has fallen out of favor under current Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and is be benched more often at United.

Lingard was a key member in the England squad that made the semi finals of the 2018 World Cup, but now finds himself lacking playing time.

He would benefit from a move away from Manchester United.

#9 Xherdan Shaqiri

Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool FC - Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool FC - Premier League

Shaqiri joined Liverpool in the summer of 2018 for a reported £13.5 million fee. He was part of the UEFA Champions League winning squad in his first season.

The footballer also won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2019, as well as the Premier League in 2020, Liverpool's first league title in 30 years.

Shaqiri is a former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan player. The Swiss footballer has always been a 'super-sub' at Liverpool, but was a reliable asset to Jurgen Klopp over the past couple of seasons.

Liverpool signed Wolves winger Jota in the summer, which has sent Shaqiri further down the pecking order at Liverpool.

Shaqiri has only features in the Carabao Cup for Liverpool this season. It's unlikely that the 29-year-old footballer will play often for Liverpool again and definitely seems to have fallen out of favor.

#8 John Stones

England v Montenegro - UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifier
England v Montenegro - UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifier

John Stones signed for Manchester City from Everton for an initial £47.5 million with add-ons making him the world's second most expensive defender.

When Manchester City signed Stones, the England footballer was one of the most highly rated ball-playing center-backs in the Premier League.

He won the Premier League in 2018 and 2019, the EFL Cup in 2018, 2019 and 2020, plus the FA Cup in 2019 as well. Stones has however failed to live up to his transfer fee and the hype that surrounded him when he joined Manchester City.

The 26-year-old footballer has been prone to errors, and lacks the physicality and pace that Pep Guardiola demands from his defenders. Manchester City have also invested millions in new center-backs, signing the Aymeric Laporte, Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias.

Stones would benefit from a move to a smaller Premier League club. The former Everton man is still 26, and has every chance of making it to England's Euro 2021 squad, if he finds regular playing time.

#7 Antonio Rudiger

Germany v Turkey - International Friendly
Germany v Turkey - International Friendly

Rudiger was signed by Chelsea in 2017 for an estimated £27 million from Roma. The German footballer had a solid start at Chelsea, adding much needed speed and physical presence to a Chelsea backline that had just lost John Terry.

Rudiger has won an FA Cup and a Europa League during his time at Chelsea. The 27-year-old has however struggled to make his way into the Chelsea starting line-up off late, after suffering a dip in form last season.

Chelsea finished the 2019-20 Premier League season in fourth place, and were criticized for their defensive performances.

Rudiger was blamed for Chelsea's defensive woes and has now has fallen out of favour at Chelsea after the Blues signed veteran defender Thiago Silva during the summer.

#6 Olivier Giroud

Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea - Carabao Cup Fourth Round
Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea - Carabao Cup Fourth Round

Olivier Giroud will arguably be remembered as one of the most underrated strikers in the Premier League.

Giroud has not been as prolific as he was for Arsenal during his time at Chelsea, but the 34-year-old was back in form towards the end of last season, post lockdown.

He was able to replace youngster Tammy Abraham as Chelsea's starting striker.

The France international is a cult hero for his country, and is currently France's second highest goal-scorer. Giroud still has a lot to offer any club, but currently finds himself rooted to the bench at Chelsea.

#5 Christian Eriksen

FC Internazionale v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - UEFA Europa League Quarter Final
FC Internazionale v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - UEFA Europa League Quarter Final

In 2014, Eriksen joined Tottenham and was named the club's Player of the Year in his debut season.

During his seven years at the club, he was also named the club's Player of the Year in the 2016–17 season. In the 2018–19 season, Eriksen became only the second player to record 10+ assists in four successive Premier League seasons .

Eriksen joined Inter Milan in January of 2020, as he seeked a new challenge, and believed in the project Inter Milan was undertaking under Antonio Conte.

Eriksen joined Inter Milan as one of the most highly rated attacking midfielders in the world, but has failed to find his feet in Italy.

The Dane was linked with a move away from Inter in the summer after just 6 months at the club.

Conte has preferred to use more physical and dynamic players at the center of the park, which meant Eriksen's role at the club has been limited to a bit-part one.

#4 Sergio Romero

Manchester United v LASK - UEFA Europa League Round of 16: Second Leg
Manchester United v LASK - UEFA Europa League Round of 16: Second Leg

Sergio Romero joined Manchester United from Sampdoria on a free transfer in the summer of 2015.

The Argentine goalkeeper has made only seven Premier League appearances for Manchester United during his five seasons at the club, but has been a regular starter for the Red Devils in all their Cup competitions.

Romero has arguably been one of the best second-choice goalkeepers in the world, which many calling for him to replace David De Gea as the No.1 at Manchester United, when the Spaniard was going through a run of bad form.

Romero has now become Manchester United's third-choice keeper after the club retained the services of promising young keeper Dean Henderson.

At 33, Romero is still a top-quality goalkeeper who has been treated rather unfairly at Manchester United.

The Argentine would benefit a move away from the club, much like fellow Argentine Emiliano Martinez has after joining Aston Villa from Arsenal this summer.

#3 Donny Van de Beek

Brighton And Hove Albion v Manchester United - Carabao Cup Fourth Round
Brighton And Hove Albion v Manchester United - Carabao Cup Fourth Round

It seems odd to add the name of a player who only joined his current club 3 months ago.

Van de Beek moved from Ajax to Manchester United in a deal worth £40 million. The Dutch international was massively impressive during his time at Ajax, with whom he made it to the finals of the Europa League and the semifinals of the Champions League.

Van de Beek was linked with moves to Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United after his showings for Ajax and decided to join the Red Devils this summer.

Despite the large outlay made by United to sign Van de Beek, the Dutchman has played on 59 minutes of Premier League football this season.

Van de Beek was an unused substitute in Manchester United's home draw against Chelsea last weekend.

The 23-year-old has struggled to break in United's midfielder, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer preferring to play Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Fred and Scott McTominay ahead of him.

Van de Beek might be regretting his move to Manchester already, but it remains to be seen how much of an impact he will have at the club over the next few months.

#2 Luka Jovic

Club Brugge KV v Real Madrid: Group A - UEFA Champions League
Club Brugge KV v Real Madrid: Group A - UEFA Champions League

Luka Jovic's rise to stardom was nothing short of epic. The Serbian caught everyone's eye during his time on loan at Frankfurt from Benfica.

He became the youngest players to score 5 goals in a Bundesliga game at Frankfurt, and scored 10 goals in the Europa League for the German club.

Jovic's performances for Frankfurt made Real Madrid spend £60 million to secure his services in the summer of 2019.

The 22-year-old has however, been a massive flop at Real Madrid, scoring just 2 goals in 20 La Liga appearances for the club.

Jovic was linked with a move away from Real Madrid in the summer, but seems to have been given another chance to prove himself at the Bernabeu.

Jovic is currently being used as an impact sub by Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, and is unlikely to find his way into the starting line up.

#1 Mesut Ozil

Arsenal FC v Olympiacos FC - UEFA Europa League Round of 32: Second Leg
Arsenal FC v Olympiacos FC - UEFA Europa League Round of 32: Second Leg

Mesut Ozil's falling out with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been one of the most documented stories in recent times.

Özil relocated to England to join Premier League club Arsenal in a then club-record deal worth £42.5 million.

During his first season, Özil helped end Arsenal's nine-year trophy drought, winning the FA Cup in 2014.

He later became victorious in two more FA Cup campaigns. Özil would also record the second most assists (19) in a Premier League season in 2015–16.

The German playmaker has struggled to find regular playing time at Arsenal since the departure of former boss Arsene Wenger.

Özil has not played for Arsenal since football season resumed and has now been left out of the Gunners squad for the Premier League and Europa League this season.

Ozil is currently Arsenal's highest-paid player, and seems to be keen on staying at the club till his contract expired next summer.

The 31-year-old has had a massive fall from fame in recent years, and would benefit greatly from leaving the North-London club.
