Top 5 Left-Backs in the Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur v Leicester City - The Emirates FA Cup Third Round
Danny Rose of Tottenham Hotspur

The fullback slot has been difficult to fill for the top sides. Some players have been morphed into the left back slot and some sides have gone over scores of players trying to find the right fit. Some examples of this being Liverpool with James Milner last season and Manchester United more recently with Ashley Young, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian.

Some clubs have managed to sort out the position with some brilliant players. We will be taking a look at the top left sided fullbacks in the Premier League.

5. Danny Rose

Comfortably one of the best in his position in the league, the Englishman has grown from strength to strength. Rose provides great width and his crossing ability has steadily improved.

Although Mauricio Pochettino uses squad rotation well and given Spurs' depth in the Left Back role with Kieren Trippier and Ben Davies around, Rose had stood out as the best in the squad. His recent injury problems and links away from the club have dampened his chances a little but there is no doubting his immense ability.

He was valued at close to £40 million according to rumours in the transfer window.

Recent indications that a Spurs return was on the cards, despite his snarky comments on the club at the beginning, suggest how highly Spurs value him.

4. Ryan Bertrand

Burnley v Southampton - Premier League
Ryan Bertrand of Southampton as George Boyd looks on

Bertrand belongs to a breed of players who belonged to Chelsea but is now flourishing elsewhere. Considered one of the best young players at Chelsea having joined initially from Gillingham, he went out on loans to many teams in the lower divisions before making his debut for Chelsea.

He never got a consistent run in the first team and he finally left the club for Southampton where he has evolved into an England regular. He is considered to be one of the most consistent players in the league and considering Southampton's other woes, that is a real blessing.

He won a PFA team of the year spot in 2015 and has made 79 appearances for the Saints since his £10 million move from Chelsea. Bertrand's strength is that he operates both as an orthodox fullback and is also capable of running down the left flank in a more attacking role.

3. Leighton Baines

Everton FC v Apollon Limassol - UEFA Europa League
Leighton Baines in action for Everton

Leighton Baines has managed 318 Premier League appearances for Everton and another 72 for Wigan in the top flight. In this time he has 50 assists and 30 goals. He is slowly reaching the end of his career but his consistency is noteworthy.

Known for his ability to run wide and provide brilliant crosses from the left-hand side, Baines has a knack for creating chances from the deep apart from being solid at the back. His penalty record is also excellent and Everton fans have been nervous about a long-term replacement being brought in considering the Everton man is 32.

While he has lost some pace recently, Baines has a sense of calmness that brings a certain amount of authoritative brilliance.

He is a combination of both the solid and the spectacular and quite simply one of the best in his position in the league.

2. Ben Davies

Tottenham Hotspur v Watford - Premier League
Ben Davies celebrates against Watford

It is probably owing to good fortune that Spurs have two of the best in a position that is hard to fill in most sides, Davies has been on a high this season so far. Being kept out of the first team by Danny Rose except when used as a part of the squad rotation system, the Welshman has seized the opportunity this season to cement himself as a great choice for Spurs at the left-back slot.

Quick on the ball and a good passer, Davies likes to cross the ball, while providing a solid cover at the back. He has so far managed 2 assists and 2 goals this season in the league and looks set to push Danny Rose to second choice.

The former Swansea man is also a key player of Wales and at only 24, he seems to be in a great position to fulfil his potential.

1.Marcos Alonso

Chelsea v Everton - Premier League
Marcos Alonso at Chelsea

It is controversial to have Alonso at the top of the Left Back standings, much like the decision to bring the ex-Bolton man to Stamford Bridge last season. Alonso has been sensational in his left wing back role at Chelsea, creating chances and providing a marauding dynamism that keeps the opposition at bay.

The Real Madrid Academy product has scored 8 goals in 38 appearances since joining the club and has impressed critics and fans alike.

While Alonso has to prove he can replicate his exploits from last season, he still is the best in the left-back role in the league right now on form and end product alone, with players like Benjamin Mendy yet to create a name for themselves.
