For every striker to ever play in England, the Premier League Golden Boot is the pinnacle of individual achievements available. As it’s a great honour to be classified as the top scorer in the world’s most-watched league. It’s an opportunity to put your name alongside the greats of world football.

No man has won the PL golden boot more than Thierry Henry (4), followed by Alan Shearer who has won it 3 times. As a club, Arsenal has produced the most number of golden boot winners at 6, joint with Liverpool. This season’s PL golden boot winner could quite easily come from either of those two clubs. This season may be one of the toughest and tightest golden boot races in the league's history. All of the top six clubs have prolific strikers that their teams are heavily relying on for points and goals.

Here are the top six contenders for the Premier League Golden Boot.

#6 Tammy Abraham

Perhaps the surprise package of the season, Tammy Abraham has taken the Premier League by storm so far. After spending what seemed like an eternity on loan, the 22-year-old has come into the first team set up and started scoring goals for fun. Frank Lampard has placed all his faith in the youngster with Chelsea currently on a year-long transfer ban. As things stand today, the young forward has scored 10 league goals in 12 appearances, averaging a goal every 90 minutes.

Frank Lampard has been rewarded for the trust he’s shown in the youngster, despite everyone telling him at the start of the season to play the more experienced Michi Batshuayi or Olivier Giroud. Questions will emerge about whether the 22-year-old can maintain this form, but the way Chelsea are currently playing suggests he’ll have a lot of chances to prey on throughout the season.

#5 Harry Kane

Will Kane win the Golden Boot for a third time?
Will Kane win the Golden Boot for a third time?

Since bursting onto the scene in 2013, Harry Kane has gone onto score an unprecedented 131 PL goals. Lest we forget, the Spurs striker is only 26 years old. The Englishman has averaged at least 20 goals a season over four of his last five seasons in the PL, winning the golden boot in 2015/16 and 16/17. Only a few other men in history can boast to be multiple golden boot winners.

There’ll never be a season where you can write off Harry Kane. Yes, his team are currently underperforming and void of confidence, but this man is one of the most prolific scorers in Premier League history. Despite playing in a faltering Tottenham side, the England captain has still managed to score six goals in 11 league appearances. Once Spurs find their feet and play in their normal free-flowing nature, the true Harry Kane will appear, and we’ll see a much-improved strike rate.

#4 Sergio Aguero

Is he the greatest striker in Premier League history? A case could be made favouring this argument. Regardless of where he stands in the all-time rankings, Sergio Aguero will once again be in the running for this year’s golden boot. The 4-time PL champion has scored 9 goals in 10 appearances, averaging a goal every 82 minutes. Bear in mind, Pep Guardiola has decided to use Gabriel Jesus more frequently this season, often leaving the 31-year-old on the bench as a result. Despite that, Aguero is still in the running for the golden boot.

No team in the league creates more chances per game than Manchester City, thus giving a striker of Aguero’s clinical nature the increased likelihood of scoring regularly. Despite scoring 173 PL goals in 250 appearances, the Argentinean legend has only won the golden boot once, which was in 2015. Will this be the season that Aguero adds a second golden boot to his immortal name?

#3 Jamie Vardy

It’s about time we all started to appreciate the greatness of Jamie Vardy. This season, the 32-year-old has made a blistering start, scoring 11 goals in 12 games, averaging a goal every 98 minutes. He’s one of the main components of Leicester's charge for a top-four finish.

As things stand, he is the league’s top scorer and he doesn’t look like slowing down any time soon. With the likes of James Maddison and Harvey Barnes behind him creating chances, his supply won’t stop either. The England faithful are now hoping for the striker to come out of international retirement as he’s currently England’s most in-form striker.

The former non-league player only arrived in the Premier League in 2014, since then he’s gone onto score an amazing 91 goals. The 32-year-old is on course to join the coveted 100 PL goals club, etching his name in the history books forever.

#2 Mohamed Salah

It’s fair to say Mohamed Salah’s stint at Chelsea wasn’t the most fruitful for all parties, but since the Egyptian has come back to England, he’s been a phenomenon. Alongside Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, Salah has formed the most feared attack in world football. The Egyptian’s incredible strike rate has propelled Liverpool into becoming the Champions of Europe, with the Premier League title now firmly in their sights.

This season Salah has scored 6 goals in 11 appearances, averaging a goal every 157 minutes. Perhaps a victim of his own success, last season the 27-year-old ‘disappointingly’ scored 22 goals, 10 less than his record-breaking campaign in 2017/18.

In total, the Reds winger has scored 62 goals in 98 PL appearances and he’s still got a few more years left of his prime. It’s not impossible for Salah to break his own scoring record as Jurgen Klopp’s men are in imperious form, rolling through into the Christmas period unbeaten.

#1 Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang

Time and time again, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has proved himself to be one of the best strikers in Europe. Wherever he’s been, the Gabonese international has scored an abundance of goals. Since arriving in England, the 30-year-old has impressively scored 40 goals in 61 PL appearances.

Despite playing in a struggling Arsenal side, Aubameyang has already scored 8 goals in 12 appearances, averaging a goal every 135 minutes. If he’s managed to produce that output without Mesut Özil or a creative force behind him, imagine what he’ll do when the Gunners actually start playing like a cohesive team.

Having been made club captain due to Granit Xhaka’s recent spat with the fans, it’s clear that Aubameyang will continue to be the focal point of Arsenal’s attack this season. And if the Gunners have any chance of finishing in the top 4, they’ll need the explosive forward to maintain his current strike rate.
