Tottenham face off against Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the 2024-25 EFL Cup's Round of 16 this Wednesday. Tottenham eliminated EFL Championship strugglers Coventry City in the previous round, while Manchester City comfortably dispatched Watford.
So which of these Premier League giants will advance into the quarter-finals in December?
Tottenham vs Manchester City Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- Despite Manchester City enjoying far more success than Tottenham in recent years, their record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is not good. They were defeated in their first five visits there and failed to even score a goal in any of those games. However, last season saw Pep Guardiola's men crack the code and defeat Spurs away twice, including in the FA Cup.
- Tottenham and Manchester City famously faced off in the final of the EFL Cup in the 2020-21 campaign. City came away with a semi-controversial 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Aymeric Laporte, who arguably should've been sent off earlier in the game.
- These sides enjoyed differing fortunes in this weekend's Premier League matches. Manchester City defeated struggling Southampton 1-0, while Tottenham slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in a disappointing showing.
- Tottenham can probably count themselves fortunate to still be in the EFL Cup this season. They trailed Coventry coming into the last two minutes of their third-round game, only to miraculously turn things around thanks to goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson.
- Manchester City may well choose a weakened side in this game. Not only do they have numerous injury concerns, including Jack Grealish, Jeremy Doku, Rodri and Kevin de Bruyne, but Pep Guardiola has suggested that he wants to rest players for this one, feeling they might be burned out.
Tottenham vs Manchester City Prediction
It's probably fair to say that this game might mean more for Tottenham than it does for Manchester City.
Ange Postecoglou's men are desperate to end their 16-year trophy drought, and so the EFL Cup could be a key target, whereas City are more likely to focus on the Premier League and Champions League.
Add in the fact that Spurs will be desperate to erase the memories of their dismal loss to Crystal Palace, and they should be hungry to impress here.
Even with a weakened side, though, City will still be very dangerous, particularly as Pep Guardiola is likely to pick at least a few of his biggest names.
Overall, then, this is a tough game to predict, but we suspect Tottenham will just about get over the line, probably by a single goal.
Prediction: Tottenham 1-0 Manchester City
