Real Madrid survived an early scare by Atletico Madrid to reach the final of the UEFA Champions League for the second successive season. Los Rajoblancos took the lead through Saul Niguez’s header in the 12th minute before Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead from the spot only four minutes later after Fernando Torres was fouled inside the box.

The two early goals gave Atletico Madrid the platform to mount one of the greatest comebacks of all-time, having lost the first-leg 3-0 courtesy of a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick. However, a magical run by Karim Benzema which resulted in an Isco goal dashed the hopes of Diego Simeone’s side, who were knocked out of the elite European competition for the fourth successive season by their arch-rivals. Los Blancos won the tie 4-2 on aggregate.

Zinedine Zidane’s side will face Juventus in the final at Cardiff on 3rd June where they will be looking to become the first team in the Champions League era to retain the title.

Twitter, as you would expect, exploded after the remarkable achievement of Cristiano Ronaldo and company. Here are the best tweets:
