Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to help Real Madrid almost clinch La Liga title

Cristiano Ronaldo produced a performance of the highest-quality to help Real Madrid inch closer to the La Liga title courtesy of a 4-1 win over Celta Vigo at the Balaidos. The win helps Real Madrid leapfrog Barcelona at the top of the table and they need just a point on Sunday to win their first title since 2011-12.

The game was marred with controversies as the referee, Juan Martínez Munuera, made a series of high-profile mistakes. Ronaldo opened the scoring with an excellent finish from his left foot to become the All-time top scorer in Europe’s top 5 leagues with 367 goals, overtaking Tottenham Hotspur legend Jimmy Greaves.

The Portuguese superstar then doubled his side’s lead with another left-footed instinctive finish on the counter, after John Guidetti missed an excellent chance on the other end. Things got heated up soon after as Iago Aspas was sent off for a second bookable offence by the referee, who deemed the Spaniard to have dived inside the box when, in fact, Aspas was fouled by Sergio Ramos and should have won his side a penalty.

Things didn’t end just here, moments later Ronaldo dived in the opposition box and while no penalty was awarded this time also, the Portuguese was not booked also. The 32-year-old was just one booking away from missing the final game of the season and the referee ensured that he plays it. Guidetti pulled one back for the home side but it proved to be only a consolation goal as strikes from Benzema and Kroos helped Zinedine Zidane’s side record a comfortable 4-1 win.

Twitter, as you would expect, went into a frenzy following the controversial win and here are the best tweets:
