Twitter explodes as shambolic refereeing robs Bayern Munich against Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo’s incredible hat-trick helped Real Madrid eliminate Bayern Munich in the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League, however, the game was marred with controversies. From Arturo Vidal’s sending off to two offside goals by Cristiano Ronaldo, referee Viktor Kassai and his team made plenty of blunders during the course of the game.

Real Madrid were fortunate after the referee decided against sending Casemiro off for a second bookable offence after he fouled Arjen Robben, having already been brandished a yellow for the penalty he conceded. To make matters worse, Kassai then sent off Arturo Vidal only minutes later for a perfectly legitimate challenge on Marco Asensio, showing the Chilean his second yellow card, having already been booked in the opening exchanges of the game. This completely changed the complexion of the game, as where Madrid should have been down to 10-men, Bayern bizarrely found themselves a man down.

To rub salt into the wounds of Carlo Ancelotti’s side, the referee and his assistant allowed Cristiano Ronaldo’s two extra-time goals to stand, despite the Portuguese being offside on both the occasions. This proved to be the sucker punch as Bayern – already a man down – could not recover after conceding twice in extra-time and Marco Asensio capped off a lucky yet memorable win for Los Blancos with a tidy finish across Manuel Neuer.

Twitter, as you would expect, didn’t hold back in criticising the referees while questions were also raised as to why Video Technology was not being introduced in football. Here are the best tweets:

For once, even Piers Morgan is right but the referees aren’t!

The Hungarian Job a.k.a. Daylight robbery

Tweet of the year?

Arguably the worst refereeing display of this year, if not all time.

The outrage...

Even John Arne Riise didn’t hold back

Who the man?

Gerard Pique was not impressed by the referees either, rather ironically

But the Barcelona star gets destroyed by a Crystal Palace player and others....

True story!

OUCH!

At least someone makes a valid point!
