Liverpool finished their Premier League campaign this season with a 2-0 win against Wolves at Anfield only to finish second to Manchester City. The Reds earned as many as 97 points over the 38-match campaign and still came second to Pep Guardiola’s side, who thrashed Brighton 4-1 at the Amex stadium to retain the Premier League title. It all looked well for Liverpool when Sadio Mané opened the scoring for the Reds at the 17th minute of the game and Murray broke the deadlock for Brighton at Amex at the 27th minute mark, but Liverpool’s dream of lifting the famous trophy for the first time since it’s refurbishment back in 1992, faded away with two quick goals from Manchester City in Brighton.Although, again, Mané doubled the lead at the Merseyside to secure the three points, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan’s second half strikes extended City’s lead to three goals and ensured Guardiola’s second title as a manager for the Blues. However, Jürgen Klopp’s men should hold their head high, as they fought till the end and pushed Man City to the limits. To put things into more perspective, 97 points in any other season apart from 2017-18 would have earned them their much-awaited domestic league crown but this time on, Pep Guardiola’s men won 14 matches on bounces to beat the Reds to the title. The Reds can also consider themselves unlucky, as no side ever in the history of the Premier League has lost only one game during the course of the campaign and not won the title. However, Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has heaped praise on his players after the game. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the German manager has also congratulated Manchester City for their outstanding achievement."An outstanding season. We had a proper competitor and well done to them – they have 198 points in two seasons which is incredible,” he insisted."We made a much bigger jump development wise. The boys pushed themselves to new levels, which I love, and that development and improvement is not finished,” he also added.Meanwhile, the Twitteraties have hailed Liverpool for their incredible push to win the Premier League title this season.#LFC end the league season on 97 points - bettering 116 of the previous 119 champions. They are unbeaten at home for a second successive top-flight term for the first time since 1979-80. Posted their best defensive record in the Premier League era.And they're going to Madrid!— Melissa Reddy (@MelissaReddy_) May 12, 2019Painful to lose by a single point but although they won't say it, clubs around the world would love to be in our position. We are going for our 6th European title. As a squad we are just beginning this journey, not finishing it. We head for Madrid to make it number 6.— DaveOCKOP (@DaveOCKOP) May 12, 2019For the 30th time Liverpool put a smile on our faces by winning in the league this season. They’ve given everything they have got, grafted their arses off, won 97 points and reached the European Cup final again. They’ll do for me. Up the fucking Reds. ✊🏻— Gareth Roberts (@robbohuyton) May 12, 2019Congratulations to @ManCity on being the first club to retain the Premier League title for 10 years. A simply magnificent season. Congratulations too to @LFC. To finish 2nd on 97 points with only one defeat is extraordinary. A simply magnificent season.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) May 12, 2019Expecting plenty of banter from rivals – BUT, never forget, there’s a 25-point gap between us and 3rd place – AND, we’re in the Champions League Final.— Ben Webb (@BenWebbLFC) May 12, 2019FT: #LFC 2 Wolves 0: No PL title party at Anfield but a collective feeling of immense pride. What a team. What a manager. What a season - 97pts and just one league defeat. Now go and lift the European Cup in Madrid.— James Pearce (@JamesPearceEcho) May 12, 2019Liverpool in the Premier League this season:• Fewest defeats (1)• Fewest goals conceded (22)• Two Golden Boot winners• Golden Glove winnerThe greatest ever runners-up. 🥈 pic.twitter.com/B4n9ZRWTCy— Squawka Football (@Squawka) May 12, 2019What a season. It’s an incredible team that will fight, chase and claw at the top for the foreseeable future. A club of a youthful age & a manager who isn’t going anshwere. Nothing to bemoan.— Leanne Prescott (@_lfcleanne) May 12, 2019This team has done us proud. Our @premierleague campaign might be over but we're not finished yet. We've shared plenty of special moments together this season. One game remains. See you in Madrid ✊— Liverpool FC (@LFC) May 12, 2019
