With a man down, Arsenal succumbed to yet another defeat against rivals Chelsea as Diego Costa’s goal proved to be the difference. Disaster struck for Arsene Wenger and his men when Per Mertesacker was handed was shown a straight red for his challenge on Costa. Although replays later suggested that there was not much contact between the two players.
The red card forced Wenger’s hand to take off Olivier Giroud, and Chelsea took the advantage immediately after, scoring past Petr Cech in the 23rd minute. It was Nemanja Matic who passed the ball to Costa who flicked it towards Ivanovic. The Serb then directed the ball back to Costa, and he had no trouble from scoring from six yards out.
