Luka Modric is not a happy man despite winning the 2018 Ballon d’Or. The Croatia captain enjoyed a wonderful year, leading his nation to the final of the World Cup, as well as helping Real Madrid win a third successive Champions League title.

He subsequently won the Golden Ball at the World Cup, and was also crowned European Best Player. He later added the FIFA Best Player, and the Ballon d’Or award to his glittering individual haul.

However, the midfielder appears upset that neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Lionel Messi attended the Ballon d’Or ceremony. In a recent interview, Modric hit out at both players, insisting it is unfair they snubbed the Ballon d’Or.

According to him, Ronaldo and Messi only show up when they win, and that is not an exemplary attitude from both players.

Modric told Croatian newspaper, Sportske Novosti, via Daily Mail:

“I cannot speak about why someone didn't turn up at an award ceremony, it's their choice. It doesn't make sense, does it? It seems these votes and awards are only significant when they win.
'It's unfair to fellow players and voters who have nominated them in the past 10 years, as well as to football and the fans. However, people will act the way they think they should.”

The Real Madrid midfielder is the first player aside Ronaldo and Messi to win the Ballon d’Or since Ricardo Kaka in 2007. Within that period, Ronaldo and Messi have dominated the award, with each winning the Balon d’Or five times apiece.

Despite Modric walking away with the award this time, many football fans are still divided over whether the Croatian midfielder really deserved it.

And in the wake of his recent criticism of Ronaldo and Messi, social media has been flooding with comments and varying opinions.

Here are some of the best tweets from football fans.
