It was an entertaining game of football as Real Madrid beat Ajax FC 2-1 in their Champions League Round of 16 first leg at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Ajax FC started the game brilliantly and were all over Madrid's defence the first half of the game. However, Real Madrid got their composure as the game grows and got the lead through Karim Benzema in the 60th minute of the game.

In-form attacker, Hakim Ziyech nullified Madrid's advantage with a well-taken goal in the 75th minute of the game but Marco Asensio resorted the visitor's advantage just three minutes before the full-time whistle.

The defending champions enjoyed 49% of possession during the game and had eight shots on target as compared to Ajax's seven. The second leg of the tie will be played at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 6.

Real Madrid started the season poorly, which subsequently led to the sacking of former manager Julen Lopetegui. Former player Santiago Solari was appointed as the new manager in place of him and they managed to revive their season under his guidance.

The Los Blancos are currently 2nd in the La Liga table, six points behind the leaders Barcelona. They will play Girona and Levante next in the league before hosting Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu for the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final tie on February 28.

On the other hand, Ajax are currently second on the Eredivisie table, six points behind the leaders PSV Eindhoven. They will play HAC and Den Haag next in the league before squaring up against Feyenoord in the KNVB Cup on February 18.
