Arsenal fans took over social media following the club’s 2-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday. The Gunners have ended Man United’s unbeaten run in the Premier League under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Having lost to Stade Rennes in the Europa League in midweek, Arsenal returned to the Emirates to deliver a tactical masterclass. The North London outfit dominated their opponents and rightly scored in either half to seal all three points.
Arsenal’s goals were scored by Granit Xhaka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – the Gabonese striker expertly converting a second half penalty. However, it was Xhaka’s goal which caught the attention of many football fans.
The Swiss midfielder fired a trademark shot from the outside of the box which tricked David de Gea and ended at the back of the net. Xhaka’s ball initially appeared to be heading for the De Gea’s right, but it quickly changed direction, leaving the goalkeeper stuck as the ball flew into the net.
It was a goal that changed the entire complexion of the game. Interestingly, it was the only shot on target Arsenal had throughout the first half. The Gunners went on to win and are now back in the Premier League top four, following Chelsea’s own inability to win against Wolves.
Inasmuch as the 2-0 win over Man United has excited many Arsenal fans, Xhaka’s stupendous goal equally got many football fans buzzing on Twitter. In the aftermath of the game, Man United manager Solskjaer described the Switzerland international’s goal as a “Brazilian swerve”.
“It is one of them Brazilian swerves. It is a good strike and the ball moves. It is the one shot they had in the first half. We started sloppy and we gave him the chance to strike the ball,” he said.
