Southampton hosted Chelsea in Saturday's lunch-time kick-off in what was an extremely important game for both teams.Southampton started the game at 18th position, fighting for survival this season. The current champions, Chelsea, were 10 points behind 5th placed Tottenham and any further slip-ups meant that their chances of going to the UEFA Champions League next season were all but over. The first-half saw an insipid Chelsea performance, in stark contrast to the Southampton players, who fought for every ball. Their efforts were rewarded in the 21st minute as Ryan Bertrand went on a rampaging run on the flank and put it on a plate for Dusan Tadic to score the opening goal.Chelsea failed to create any real openings and headed into half-time with some work to do.The second half started in similar fashion as the Blues lacked ambition. Their woes were compounded at the hour mark when Jan Bednarek scored on his first league start.Chelsea got one back through Olivier Giroud ten minutes later as he headed it into the back of the net from Marcos Alonso's perfect cross. The goal sparked something as Chelsea miraculously went on to take the lead within the space of eight minutes.Hazard equalised when he found himself free inside the box and Giroud scored his second, striking the ball into the bottom corner following a free kick.Southampton applied the pressure but Chelsea held on to claim a crucial victory. Here's how Twitter reacted:The Goals:Tadic goal, well played from Bertrand pic.twitter.com/zPJmINu9UW— Tyłer (@TFfutbol) April 14, 2018Jan Bednarek makes it 2-0 to Southampton! ⚽️——#chelseasouthampton pic.twitter.com/ZITObISxfZ— EverythingFootball (@evefootball21) April 14, 2018Olivier Giroud first goal. 2-1 #CFC pic.twitter.com/Mm0Decy7ay— ⒹⓎⓁ (@ChelseaDyl) April 14, 2018GOALLLL HAZARDASSIST WILLIAN pic.twitter.com/pjvb3GMOUG— a (@oatcr7_) April 14, 2018⚽️ Southampton 2-3 Chelsea | Giroud (GOAL) 78' pic.twitter.com/h8lL1iVIsj— ★ D9INE ★ (@CY_STADIUM_9) April 14, 2018Chelsea were initially trolled mercilessly:Watching Chelsea these days feels like doing community service.— Bert Stolze (@CFC19052012) April 14, 2018HT: Southampton 1-0 Chelsea.
