Twitter reacts as Chelsea icon Frank Lampard agrees to join New York City FC

Frank Lampard is set to call time on his 13-year stint at Chelsea by signing for Manchester City’s MLS franchise, New York City FC.

The three-time Premier League champion was at the Citizens’ Carrington complex on Sautrday, alongside Atletico Madrid striker David Villa, to finalise the terms of his proposed move across The Atlantic.

Roy Hodgson relieved the England international of his duties at the Three Lions’ training camp so he could meet with New York City Head Coach Jason Kreis and thrash out a deal.

When the Major League Soccer season commences next March, the Chelsea stalwart will be earning considerably less than the £150,000-a-week salary afforded to him at Stamford Bridge. Although, his weekly wage will be augmented by generous bonuses.

A player so inextricably entwined with the Chelsea blue, it will be strange seeing Lampard turn out in any other strip, let alone plying his trade in another country altogether.

Upon news of Lampard’s departure, the social media collective were out in full force to eulogise the one-time Ballon d’Or runner-up.
