Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has confirmed that Victor Moses will not make his anticipated return from injury when Chelsea face Azerbaijani champions Qarabag in the Champions League later this evening.

Conte had hinted that the Nigeria international could feature as part of the squad travelling to Baku for the fixture, though the right wing-back has remained in London to finish his recovery after sustaining a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace on October 14.

He has missed the Blues last seven matches in all competitions and will be hoping that he can get back up to speed quickly. Having surprised many by establishing a breakthrough last season, Moses played a key role in the west Londoners' Premier League success last term.

Moses deserves immense credit for the way he has handled playing in an unfamilar position, one that he made his own. Before his injury, he only made one Champions League appearance this term - during Chelsea's excellent 2-1 away win over Atlético Madrid at the end of September.

He did train with the first-team squad before they travelled to Azerbaijan, where he was pictured doing ball work, running and shooting drills among other training exercises.

He'll be expected to return to action on Saturday with Chelsea travelling to Merseyside, as Liverpool await in another tough fixture to come for Conte's men.

In his place, promising teenage defender Dujon Sterling, 18, has been temporarily promoted into the senior side. The talented youngster recently signed a new four-and-a-half year contract deal with the defending champions and had praise for Moses as well as fellow fullback Davide Zappacosta.

"Working regularly with the first-team has been a good experience for me. It's a stepping stone to help me become comfortable working with these players week in, week out, which is my ultimate goal. Victor and Davide are always talking to me, giving me good advice."
